Boating and Water Sports

Let’s start with one of the most popular activities at Lake Arlington—boating. The lake only allows non-motorized watercraft, so the experience is peaceful and quiet.

If you’ve ever been on a paddle boat or kayak, you’ll know how calming it can be to glide over the water. If you haven’t, this is the place to try it. As per AHPD, here are the prices you can expect to rent water sports equipment:

Rental Fee
Paddle Boats (Adult) $8
Paddle Boats (Child 2-5 yrs) $4
Kayaks (Single) $20/hr
Kayaks (Tandem) $25/hr
Sailboats (1st hour) $30
Sailboats (Additional hour) $15
Paddle Board $20/hr
Pontoon Pedal Boat $45/hr
Swan Boat $25/hr
Punch Card (5 x 1-hour rentals) $120

If you’re thinking of sailing, make sure to call ahead—sailboat rentals need to be reserved in advance. Frequent boaters might want to grab a season pass to make things easier.

Before you hit the water, there’s one important thing: boaters must check in with the Boat Dock staff. They’re there to ensure that all watercraft are clean and free of invasive species.

Also, don’t forget to wear a personal flotation device—it’s mandatory for everyone on the water. Safety first, right?

Fishing at Lake Arlington

If boating’s not your thing, maybe fishing is more your speed. The lake is stocked with a variety of fish species like bass, bluegill, and catfish. Fishing at Lake Arlington is catch-and-release for most species, but if you happen to catch a carp or gizzard shad, those are the exceptions.

The official Lake Arlington website clearly states that you’ll need a fishing license if you’re between the ages of 16 and 65, which you can easily buy online or at a local bait shop.

One thing to note is that you’ve got to bring your own gear—there’s no equipment rental available. But the fishing piers are peaceful spots to set up for the day. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just looking to try your hand at fishing, Lake Arlington makes it easy to enjoy a quiet afternoon by the water. Also, consider fishing at Evergreen Lake as well.

Walking, Running, and Biking

Looking to get some exercise? The 1.84-mile paved path around the lake is the perfect place for walking, running, or biking. I love that it’s stroller and wheelchair-friendly, making it accessible for all.

The path gives you fantastic views of the lake and even crosses some natural areas with short bridges. It’s a lovely combination of nature and convenience.

There’s a system in place to keep things safe on the path: pedestrians have the right of way, and cyclists are encouraged to be mindful. It’s a friendly environment where everyone can enjoy the outdoors, whether they’re going for a light stroll or an intense workout.

Playgrounds and Outdoor Exercise Areas

Lake Arlington is a hit with families, and it’s easy to see why. There are several playgrounds, each designed for different age groups. I’ve seen kids having an absolute blast on the climbing nets and rock walls.

It’s the kind of place where your kids can run around while you relax nearby, knowing they’re entertained. For adults who want to sneak in a quick workout, there’s an outdoor exercise area equipped with workout stations.

It’s a good spot if you want to get a little strength training while enjoying the fresh air. And let’s not forget the picnic areas.

They’re equipped with covered pavilions and game tables, so you can set up a comfortable lunch while the kids play. Bring a picnic basket, and you’ve got yourself a great family day out.

After all the fun, you might need to refuel. The Boathouse, besides being the go-to place for rentals, also has a concession stand open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

You can grab a quick snack like pizza, nachos, popcorn, or ice cream. Perfect for when you need a break but don’t want to leave the park. There are restrooms inside the Boathouse as well, which are accessible during open hours.

  • Daily Fee: $10/$15 (R/NR)
  • Season Launch Pass: $65/$90 (R/NR)

Seasonal Camps and Classes

If you or your kids want to do more than just rent a boat, check out some of the seasonal programs. Lake Arlington offers camps like Adventure Camp and Sailing Camp for kids aged 9-14.

These camps introduce children to water sports in a fun, beginner-friendly way. For adults, there are kayaking and paddleboarding classes, often in partnership with local organizations.

It’s a great opportunity to learn something new, even if you’ve never tried water sports before.

Accessibility and Park Etiquette

Lake Arlington is thoughtful about accessibility, with walking paths, adaptive swings at the playgrounds, and plenty of seating areas for those who need a rest. It’s a welcoming space for visitors with disabilities, which is really heartwarming.

One thing to keep in mind: dogs aren’t allowed. While this might be a bit of a bummer for pet owners, it’s designed to prevent conflicts between different groups using the park.

Keeping the park clean and respecting the wildlife is essential to ensuring it stays beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

Tips for a Smooth Visit

Best Times to Go

The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk, but if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, try visiting on a weekday morning or late afternoon.

Warm weekends can get busy, especially during the summer, so plan accordingly if you’re hoping for a quieter experience.

Parking and Cost

Parking is free and readily available, so no worries there. While access to the park doesn’t cost a thing, activities like boating and fishing do come with fees.

If you’re planning to spend the day on the water, don’t forget to factor in those rental or launch costs.

Food Options

Thinking of staying the whole day? Bring a picnic. There are plenty of picnic tables around, and the pavilions provide some shade.

If you’re not up for packing food, the Boathouse concessions have you covered, or you can head to one of the nearby fast-food spots along Rand Road.

Wrapping It Up

There’s something truly special about Lake Arlington. It offers a balance of adventure and tranquility that’s hard to find.

Whether you’re gliding across the water in a kayak, fishing at one of the piers, or enjoying a leisurely walk around the lake, it’s the kind of place where time slows down, and you can fully enjoy the moment.

For families, outdoor enthusiasts, or anyone just looking to get a little break from everyday life, Lake Arlington provides the perfect backdrop. It’s the kind of place that becomes a go-to spot, not just for one day, but for many to come.

Grab your sunscreen, pack a lunch, and get ready to make some memories by the lake!
